An evening of fellowship

Sixty members and their guests and well wishers of
Italy participated in a much lauded Christmas party, with piped Italian
carols, free-flowing Italian wine and a succulent menu including gnocchi
fresh woodfired pizza, gnocchi, different types of pastas, meats, focaccia,
and much more topped off by three Italian desserts. The venue was Cucina by
3brothers, one of the authentic Italian restaurants in Colombo. We thank
event chair Vice President Heshan Perera; and President Daminda Mulgama for
their support.

Cena Apulia was an evening to remember with 47 members and their guests
enjoying a seven course Puglian fine dining menu, paired with fine Italian
Wines and concluding with a traditional Caffe Corretto (with Grappa). In
addition to
Chef Salvatore Turturo, from Bari (Puglia), Chefs Kapila
Jayasinghe and Charith Madhawa, along with restaurant manager Trevin Gomez,
we had a wonderful team of wait staff delivering extraordinary speed of
service. The
9th week of Italian cuisine in the World concluded that day,
and our event was undoubtedly the highlight in Sri Lanka. In addition to
introductions to each dish by the chefs, sommelier Tilosha Perera from
Wineworld (Rockland) gave commentary on the fine Italian wines. Kamal
Munasinghe, General Manager of the hotel was also thanked by Event Chair
Rajeev Aloysius and President Daminda Mulgama. H.E. Damiano Francovigh
graced the occasion as Chief Guest. The evening was made possible through
sponsorship by Colorobbia, Industrie Bitossi, Energy International
Logistics, Transmec Group, Lanka Tiles, and Omega Line.

The 25th Annual General Meeting, marking a milestone of a Council formed in 1998, was graced by H.E. Damiano Francovigh, Ambassador of Italy to Sri Lanka and the Maldives and Patron of the Council, as well as Mr. Alberto Arcidiacono, Deputy Head of Mission of the Embassy of Italy.
Commending the efforts of the SLITBC in promoting bilateral trade and investment between Italy and Sri Lanka, Ambassador Francovigh highlighted the good results of bilateral trade in 2023, whose total figure has reached more than 800 million euros with a healthy surplus for Sri Lanka of around 74 million Euro. He noted that the total relationship remains roughly the same.
A Baur & Co. Ltd Deputy Managing Director Janaka Gunasekera passed on the baton to Mr. Daminda Mulgama, who was duly elected unanimously as the President of the Council for 2024/25. He outlined his plans for the coming year, to further the objectives of the Council, and to further strengthen the perennially strong bilateral business, cultural and social ties, between Sri Lanka and Italy.
